LEGO® Punctured Torus

Because The LEGO Company get paranoid about this sort of thing I suppose I'd better make it clear that I have no formal affiliation with them, that my views are my own and do not necessarily represent theirs, and so on. So if you think any of this is official you are as deluded as they are.

This one isn't a minimal surface - it's a three-dimensional embedding of a punctured torus. I built it as an example sculpture when Wired magazine ran a short article on my mathematical lego sculptures for their October 2006 issue. It balances on a narrow 7 stud footprint.

 

As with most of my mathematical surfaces, I made use of some computer assistance, but this surface doesn't have a standard embedding so I had quite a lot of freedom to play with the parameterisation and find something I thought looked nice.
